Workshop 1 – Career Planning and Goal Setting; Job Applications (Resume and Cover Letter)

Date – Tuesday 5th November 2019
Time – 11am to 12.30pm
Where – E-Block at TAFE Qld, Mooloolaba Campus. 34 Lady Musgrave Drive, Mountain Creek

What – you’ll learn how to:

Write a professional resume and cover letter

  • Objective: To support students’ understanding of employers’ requirements from the position description, writing a professional resume and cover letter, and using appropriate follow up to maximise their chances to gain interviews.
  •  Rationale: Many international students over focus on the graphical technical part of how to write a resume and cover letters, and are often attracted to so called Page 2 – Confidential “template solutions”. This topic aims to help them better understand how to make an assessment of who their audience is and how to attract the interest of that individual by developing a document which showcases their uniqueness.

Career plan and goal set

  • Objective: To help students in Sunshine Coast understand some practical steps that impact personal effectiveness and frame it in a way where they can readily see how it applies to their studies and career pursuits.
  • Rationale: students often complain about not having time to work on their career during study, this problem is common and often made significantly worse by a lack of effective time management and goal setting. This topic aims to help them overcome these and reverse that issue for them.

Workshop 2 – Interview Skills and Preparation; Sunshine Coast and Australian Work Culture

Date – Wednesday 1st April 2020
Time – 11am to 12.30pm
Where – Cartwrights Restaurant, TAFE Queensland Mooloolaba campus
What – you’ll learn how to:

Interview skills and preparation

  • Objective: To help students in Sunshine Coast understand the most important things interviewers are looking for and practice in an environment where they feel supported. They will be equipped with useful preparation tips so they can start preparing now through this topic.
  •  Rationale: Situations where students need to use their spoken language skills can often cause obvious nervousness and other things which have the potential to compromise the impression they can make on others. This topic aims to provide an environment where students can practice and reflect upon things that they can do to improve the impression they make on people when using their spoken language skills.

Sunshine Coast and Australian Work Culture

  • Objectives: To help students in Sunshine Coast develop an understanding of how to identify organisational culture within work environments they might be in. Understanding how different groups might engage with change, customer service, accountability, proactiveness, etc.
  •  Rationale: Often when a graduate enters into a new environment, they don’t perceive matters of work culture, or if they do, they don’t know how to productively or professionally engage with them for the benefit of their role and their team. This topic aims to help them with this and understand how these dynamics can play out in a Sunshine Coast and Australian cultural context.
